A few years ago a job I worked had AI create content then had the copy team review it. The AI said another shoe brand "offers many styles and colors," which sounded right and why doubt such an obvious fact? I was on their site checking something else... and noticed they had one style, in two colors.

The fact it puts what is statistically most likely to come next is incredibly dangerous because it doesn't value accuracy or nuance, and every error is one that sounds perfectly reasonable in context so it doesn't stand out as something to check. As a former journalist, AI absolutely terrifies me.

And it's not a good starting point. Writing is a skill. We go to school or hone this craft over years and decades of practical experience, learning from mistakes. Having AI do a first draft saves time the way hiring a teenager to draw the blueprints saves an engineer time. It's a bad foundation.

Woman had died after a lightning strike. But when our crew got there, they learned lightning struck a tree in a yard, and the sound caused an elderly woman with heart problems to have a heart attack.

Died after, and killed by lightning are two wildly different things! But would you have asked?

Frankly, most people would feel foolish saying "just to confirm, but the woman was hit and killed by lightning, right?" And journalism trains you to think about and correct for those possible misunderstandings. I don't think AI has that skill, and it's absolutely not designed to have it or learn it.

Fuck I'm glad someone said it. ChatGPT, etc can never learn because that's not their measure of success. Their measure is sounding like a human. They are, if anything, getting worse at real learning as more people use them to do what they can't do themselves.
