I hate this almost as much as when people reply-all WHEN THEY DON'T NEED TO. I don't need to see 10000000000 of the same responses from people from within my organization.
One of my favorite things was when someone from the outlook team admitted that they read a DL that was infamous for doing exactly the out of reply thing to start new threads to help them test that feature
I've said this so many times, and will continue to do so.
Usenet was a vastly superior format for these things compared to email. It was much better suited to long running group discussions where you might want to pull other people into the discussion.
And it sucks that email won over it...
