We have just cancelled our DD to Essex Wildlife Trust because they refuse to do this.
Without exception, ever visit to one of there reserves is ruined by dogs of leads, aggressive owners and disturbed wildlife by out of control dogs and owners.

I sympathise, but many EWT reserves e.g. Abberton, Hanningfield and Fingringhoe, do not permit dogs apart from assistance dogs. In other cases there may be pre-existing public rights of way.

There is a public footpath along the edge of one and no other pre-existing public access on the reserves we use. You believe there is no public footpaths over the reserves you mention ?
If you want to defend this policy explain why out of control dogs have priority over nature loving members of EWT.

Julian: I opened my response by expressing sympathy with your anger. No dog should be out of control on a PROW, whether on an EWT reserve or not. I'm not defending a "policy" but seeking to explain a practice.

There is no public footpath at either Hanningfield or Abberton. Access is by permission of the landowner, E&SW, and the no dogs rule is at its insistence. I don't know if there is a PROW at Fingringhoe but as a former working gravel pit I doubt it.

Where PROWs exist on EWT reserves, I don't believe it could bar dogs. It could/should enforce control but that could mean confrontation between aggressive dog owners and volunteers. At Thameside Nature Park and Blue House Farm dogs must be on a lead at all times, for example.
