I’m married to a grade two teacher and she’s taught lots of trans kids. In almost every case, the parents of these kids have been fully involved, both nurturing supporters and fierce defenders of them —clearly cherished by their child and admired by teachers, staff and their kid’s classmates.

The few students she’s known who’ve taken the massive step of coming out without their parents involvement have all had legitimate reasons for doing so. She is pretty unequivocal that if someone doesn’t respect those reasons, then they don’t really care about the safety of kids.

My partner says programs informed by the queer and trans community (such as SOGI123) here in BC are such a huge help to queer and straight kids alike, and that opposition to them comes from a place of not taking the time to learn what they are and what they’re for.

We’re seeing fear being torqued and fanned by hyper-conservative interests, and we all have role to talk to our friends, family and neighbours about why making all spaces, but especially schools, safe, inclusive and welcoming for people of all genders and identities.
