Remembering that when I interviewed Mary Astor's daughter (the delightful Marylyn Roh), she told me that her mother was an avid reader of anything she could get her hands on, even medicine bottles or other labels if there was nothing else around.

One of Astor's career-best scenes for sure. When I asked Marylyn which of her mom's movies were her favorites, she said, "I love the Falcon over and over."
Same! The book’s newly in the public domain & I’m interested to read it & see if the characters “held back” as much as in the film (possibly not, Main Street was fairly straightforward about extramarital affairs) or if that was all elided for the Hays Code.
