Agree that the money going up is a real phenomenon, but "can't last in the playoffs" seems fake. Only 4 of the 14 playoff-caliber QBs in the league will make the Conf. Championship each year, and with >20% of NFL games decided by luck, it's unclear to me that a QB's playoff record is meaningful.

Also the article uses the "headline number" to describe the value of the contract, vs. the guaranteed value. I suspect agents (and GMs) actually like chasing that headline number, because if the player insists on a top-dollar number, the club can negotiate lower guarantees for a bigger headline.

Agents get a bigger cut, clubs get flexibility on the out-years, and the player gets an ego boost from seeing their name in articles that use terms like "highest paid of all time" irrespective of whether the player actually is going to see any of that money.
