Currently trying to write a ghost AU and losing my mind trying to figure out the physics. Like ghosts can't walk on the ground AND also walk through walls. That doesn't make sense. I'm just going to rock back and forth in a corner until I figure it out - ThreadSky

suggestion： It's the coyote effect -- You know, like in the cartoons, where the coyote runs off a cliff & only realises he's in the air & should be falling when he looks down. As long as a ghost... 1/2

manages to think of an object as solid, it's solid. Once they allow their mind to recognise that physics don't apply to them anymore they can sink through floors, walk through walls etc) 2/2

I hear what you're saying (and thank you so much for engaging!) But I feel like that opens up too many possibilities. Like, what else could they do once they realize they can break normal physics just with their force of will? I feel like that would take over the whole plot

Similar to this, it makes the most sense to me that ghosts COULD walk through walls and floors, but bc they are based on a memory/soul that was used to it being a physical barrier, they've got a mental block assumption about it. So theoretically they could will themselves to float through, but +

ONLY if they willfully disregard the "assumption" in their head telling them they can't. Then it becomes a purposeful act that may be difficult/nigh impossible for some stubborn ghosts, and it won't disrupt plot too much.

This is cool. And you can also have the opposite issue with those who are too aware that they're not corporeal anymore and they keep accidentally dropping through ceilings.

Right, but if they accidentally drop through a ceiling, wouldn't they drop through the ground too? When would they stop? Hmm, maybe they end up in an underworld and have to figure out how to get out?
