I think that it’s an effective way to highlight the dissonance of their position. I also think it’s appropriate to bully elected representatives in general.

True statements but also imagine this was a racial slur, this official was black, and they had just passed a law making slurs protected speech.

Yes, I do as a matter of fact. It matters how it is done, but I absolutely think it’s appropriate, especially in a democracy to use that tactic to highlight power differentials in leaders. It makes their oppression plain and creates a permission structure to resist it.

It’s meant to be gross and uncomfortable.

The elected leader is meant to look foolish and uncomfortable. This reduces their perceived authority to their in group.

You, as a sympathetic audience, are made uncomfortable, and are now talking about the act of protest, spreading the word.

Yeah, I definitely hear this argument. And it definitely registers. I think maybe it needs to be a trans person doing it for me to be OK with it.

I really think to cognitive dissonance is jarring and effective.

I accept that, my only thought there though is that it may be more effective (broadly defined) if folks from the “in-group” make these types of protests at least alongside.

Thinking about audiences and permission structures again. Having a cishet person doing this universalizes the issue.
