When I was that age I got a crappy old laptop. Wanting to get more out of it led me to discover Linux and go down a rabbit hole that eventually led to becoming a software engineer.

This is not a tablet recommendation.

I pondered looking into a Galaxy S6 Lite with keyboard cover or external keyboard for media consumption & writing; I do own Galaxy Tabs S4 and S8 with keyboard covers and am content. The S4 does not receive Samsung updates anymore, but the S8 does.

They keyboards are decent, but - ofc - not Thinkpad level, with the S8 cover being more advanced than the S4 one.

Using a Thinkpad, I found myself getting back to the laptop whenever I had to type more than a quick reply (and I started to dictate those on the tablets, which works quite nicely)

Having said that, I still use the tablets for quick terminal sessions and the like.

As for Chromebooks, I ultimately decided to not invest into ChromeOS - but looked into one of those Lenovo Ideapad Duets before that.

I had a Duet once and it was a fun little device, but ultimately ended up returning it because it didn't have enough power to do the one thing I wanted to do on it back then (streaming Stadia games). Other than that, it was pretty interesting. But looks like they never updated that series since?

Doing a quick roundup at Amazon, it surely seems to remain underpowered, and looking at Lenovo's German site, they seem to have stopped updating the series alltogether, doing Windows S stuff instead. Well, that's a bummer.
There really was no other Chromebook series that found my interest back then.
