How many of Bluesky users are scientists? Part of sharing science, is trying to reach others outside of science. What good is sharing science if we are only talking to ourselves?

I am not a scientist however I have always been interested in all types of science subjects. From the Carrington affect to the new theory of how the universe is expanding, I am always interested. Blue sky suits more serious followers of topics, even the fun stuff. Blue Sky is better than Twitter.
I studied physical and forensic anthropology in college (BA, MA degrees) with an undergrad minor in biology. Did not pursue science professionally, but training has been an invaluable set of life skills.
I'm not a scientist, at least not professionally. I do know enough to recognize the bluesky Science feed as both excellent and inspiring, and it's the main benefit of the whole platform in my opinion, and why I recommend it to others. Keep on keepin' on.
Thank you for being here! I haven’t been on here too consistently, I tend to do instagram/tik tok better. But I’m excited to see the space that’s growing and trying to post more!
I'm medical-science-adjacent (nursing, 16 years-send snacks). Current role is dependent on staying abrest of studies, new FDA approvals, public health info & evidence-based practice changes. No idea what a lot of the posts mean, but so grateful for a free exchange of ideas & dialogue.
Not trying to say I don’t appreciate this space. But this article made me a little sad. Their bias is however that this is a science journal asking primarily other scientists. So I am genuinely just curious who we’re talking to on here.
Honestly I follow a fair number of you because I like science facts (and also especially ocean/space science facts) but the vast majority of my feed is not science related, I didn't know until this article that there were so many of you and now I must find more!
Yes it’s nice to not see anti-science rhetoric or comments but also we never know where we need to improve in our communication if we are never facing conflict.
that's a good point and I agree it can go too far. I'm a meteorologist and we'd be failing if we only gave forecasts to each other, right?
But every estimate I've seen of how many scientists there are in the world is less than 10M, so I think even a place as "small" as Bluesky is big.
I hope as more users come to the platform we will reach all types of people. I would love to know metrics of where we’re at currently. To me it still feels like only other scientists but likely because I only know scientists here!
Such statistics would be interesting, + helpful, for exactly the reasons you suggest. Despite degree in Psychology & Linguistics, I’m not a scientist, career spent mostly as an analyst in finance, now retired. However, I love discovering news + comments from scientists on BlueSky, in any discipline.
I love that I reached people like you! But I also want to reach people who don’t hold degrees and never really thought about science. Finding safe spaces is great, but conflict is where we grow.
I'm a former forestry technician who teaches martial arts on an off-grid island. I've always liked science, nature, and learning. I love that BlueSky has a strong science community.
<<-- Bachelor of Science degree gone to waste here. I do not work in the science industry . But I earned a Master's Degree in Business and I very much appreciate science and apply it daily. I mean good science. And math.

That said, I think the massive popularity of the Science Feed 🧪 on Bluesky likely means the science is reaching other people.
It would be interesting to know metrics on Feeds.

Thank you for all you do.
