How is academia supposed to help 'defend democracy' when it is itself an aristocracy?

From the Stanley Vanity Fair interview. I think the system as it is now is super unhealthy with a few superstars who can easily move and everyone else no matter how talented not given a second look. And already if you’re in that category you are lucky bc most phds do not get tenure track positions.
