In an idle moment this AM, I compared my California home's latitude to those w/in Europe. I was surprised to find that all of Europe is above me in latitude, the lower USA/CA border & Paris are the same, & were it not for the GulfStream, the UK would prolly be as cold as Hudson Bay, CA. There's a theory that Europe's late medieval "Little Ice Age" was caused by a reduction in flow of the Gulf Stream. Also a distinct possibility that climate change may stop it entirely, and that this could happen relatively suddenly.

For me, aside from the obstacle of having to learn a new language, the sweet spot would be Lisbon, or thereabouts. On the west coast, at the same latitude as the SF Bay Area.

That Gulf Stream may be shutting down. Research at Potsdam Institute on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) indicates cold winters might be ahead for Europe. Prof Stefan Rahmstorf is worth following here on bsky.

Not in this lifetime. I live at 49°N and keep open sea swimming through November/December. Childhood memories (mid 60's) are wearing hat/scarf/gloves on bonfire night (Nov5). Now at that time of year outdoor rig is often shirtsleeve order. However, studies of Greenland melt are undeniable.

Yep. Where I live in North London, UK, is at the same latitude as the northern rim of the Manicouagan crater in Quebec.

Also have an almost similar area; 1,738 km² (671 sq mi) for urban London, vs. 1,942 km² (750 sq mi) for the crater.
