I know it’s all the thing to criticise Google, and I’ve joined in myself. But the tools they’ve given academia - Google Books, and Google Scholar in particular - have transformed how many of us track down sources.

For my purposes their search engine sank without trace, but I'm a *huge* fan of scholar as a proper index (and measure) of academic 'output'. That is to say, one that includes data, software, reports, etc. -- things that an journal publisher can't easily monetize, but which most of us use every day

Much like asking a not quite 100% reliable/perfectly knowledgeable friend for a few thoughts/ideas on a new topic - incredibly quick and useful
