Also, I'm proud to say that despite this, I started a history website (https://quatr.us) that made scads of money for almost 20 years, until Wikipedia did it in. That's what allowed me to quit teaching, walk my kids to school, and still have more time for writing than most people.
It was like a miracle: I was teaching full time and single parenting three kids, scraping to pay for daycare, and then suddenly we were doing great, and the website was paying more than my tenured job, and also reaching way more people than I could by teaching.
