Murr is oddly stupid in that he thinks if he confronts people with their flaws, they are going to start pondering about that instead of oh-you-know, having their psychological defense mechanism kick into overdrive.

The way I see it Murr isn't trying to confront people with their flaws, he's just curious as to why those 'flaws' take shape and THEN starts poking the tiger to see how much information it'll give away for free
Imagine falling in love with someone as intelligent and eccentric and this genuine tornado
That's probably why Murr appreciated him all the best... There's probably been many who have fallen in love with the world he offers, even more who despise him
But few who genuinely accept everything he is
