I recommend you try the other games in the franchise, including Ace Combat 3 (SPECIFICALLY THE TRANSLATED JP VERSION) because that game has quite the storyline.

That and all signs from Ace 7 points towards returning to Ace 3

yeah its pretty similar in overall campaign structure and story telling, its a super fun jet game tho and i recommend starting with 7 or ace combat 4 if you want to play the older ones first
