Your Delia looks like ours-we make Calypso Christmas cake - the fruit is soaked for a week then the cake rests for a month before decorating with nuts. No feeding & So lovely. Perfect with nice salty butter & some cheese - used to send my Cornish FiL into a spin every year when I suggested cheese!

In the US, most people think of fruitcake as this brick of candied fruits. It's awful. Homemade is awesome.

I have no idea where I got my recipe from but it is similar to yours. Is your fluffy like a spice cake, or denser ?

My mum gave me that book and she bought it new so in total it's been in use for 43 years. Which you can tell by the absolute state of it! 😂🤷‍♀️

I've got the 'complete series' which is 3 books and I swear that I can locate any recipe without even checking the index. The scones recipe pages in book 2 are basically destroyed now though. 😂

I had a copy of the Complete Cookery Course from my Mum who had two. When that fell apart she found me one online! I've adapted the cake recipe a bit (we like it darker, almost black) but swear by the mincemeat recipe (three jars still from last year in the cellar).

I've been (half) "unfaithful" to James Martin this year. I've been using his recipe for years, but his year I decided to give the @nigelslater.bsky.social Christmas cake a go. Unless I've missed a step there are none of the Christmas spices that are usually in the ingredients.

But it still smells delicious. 😋 And as I'd bought too many ingredients (ho-ho!) I've done the James Martin one anyway, making several small individual ones to give away. Or maybe for the birds... They cooked quicker and are reminiscent of King Alfred's efforts 🫣🫠😂
