Thank goodness skills are transferable.

If they weren't I wouldn't have left teaching primary (which I loved; the politics and toxic work environment not so much) and started training clinical staff in the NHS how to use new systems. ☺️

Thinking about this more, I remember stuff better if I'm doing something physical at the same time, like building a Lego model while watching a TV show, I'll remember the TV show when I come back to disassemble it.

Learning is more messy and complex than I think a lot would like to acknowledge.

But thinking is also a skill, so looking at a problem in a different way, that thinking outside the box is also a skill, so what you say isn't just limited to physical things but can apply to mental ones too.

People aren't just information receptacles rather they're highly complex thinkers.

Do you think this comes from people who can't transfer their skills & apply something they learned in one discipline to another and just assume this is the norm? Like people with aphantasia might not believe some of us can "see" an apple in our mind's eye?

Good point. My dyslexic OH gets frustrated at some of his colleagues for not seeing the bigger picture or making the connections between issues. That pattern recognition and holding on to a lot of information and connections in his head I think is one of the dyslexia "side effects".

One of my offspring, not dyslexic but very arty has always seem connections & similarities between apparently disparate subjects. Has done from being a tiny child. It's useful to have both types of people if you want something done

Quite possibly. I think maybe also it's about ways of thinking (linear or lateral). But I think a lot is just post hoc justification.

I'm quite a linear thinker. I'm very logical & can spot errors. Made me a good programmer & a better support person. When I gave support materials to my students (knowledge organisers?) I did it in the format that would help me. I realised that some found a more holistic version more useful

So I made both available. Same info. Very different appearance. The external verifier hated one, loved the other. Somehow didn't realise they were the same thing.
