In one of the classes I’m taking currently, that’s the attitude my professor has taken: “we should just make peace with it and learn to make it work for us”. It bothers me endlessly! I’ll read this and possibly send it over to said professor

It really concerns me that my kids might be expected to use gen ai in school, and I honestly don’t know how I can fight that other than trying to say they can’t participate on moral/ethical grounds. I don’t have the energy to spare to educate an institute of education or fight them on it. ☹️

Which is to say that I think this is a problem that requires resistance from all sides. Teachers, admins, students, parents, and maybe industry too (tho I don’t have a lot of hope for that one). We need all the energy we can muster. 💜

Oh, I’m so sorry. This is all such a pickle. There are some in education who oppose AI, but many are caught in the hype. I think it absolutely helps if parents nudge their children away from AI use! All this won’t fly if there’s no buy-in & demand for AI from students, but so far I’m seeing a lot.

I sat in a meeting of academic leadership last week and listened to them all fawn over AI and how we need to be integrating it for all students and one even compared it to electricity in the “scope of its disruption” and I just 🤮

Coincidentally (or maybe not), the author seems attuned to the speculative writing community & how strongly AI resistance goes here. I gotta say it’s been interesting (😬), as a scifi writer myself, to see my rhetcomp colleagues seek a “critical AI literacy” when my writing folks are like, “Fuck no.”

Maybe the only critical AI pedagogy possible is to not teach it at all. To instead explain why this tool built on theft and environmental destruction is just not it. That when they try to make you redundant, you tell them, “No, I’m human.” Don’t be complicit in your own erasure.

I also had a good conversation with a prof in my uni's ESL program (which forbids AI for assignments!) about how depending on AI means students aren't learning the thinking and organization skills that are the foundation of good writing.

(But yes, it's really odd seeing universities, with their environmental initiatives and emphasis on protecting intellectual property, largely ignoring the environmental and IP issues involved with this tech.)

Glad you know someone opposing AI! And 🎯 on uni’s buy-in. My uni invited Sam Altman for a talk. He said some outrageous things (eg calling research on the environmental impact of AI “just a meme” & untrue), & the moderator, a prof, didn’t challenge him at all. Just complicit “okay” throughout. 🤮

Yeah, it seems like it's basically my uni's English and Creative Studies division (at least for 1st year courses), ESL, and little else. Though judging from the article you shared, even this much might be a high bar.
