We've been casually looking at home batteries to help with the time of day rates they implemented in Michigan. The prices seem almost in free fall.

It's looking likely at this rate by end of next year it'll be a no brainer for us to have some battery system.

Wow! We’re due for a new roof in a couple of years, and I’ll be pricing things out to see if it will be worthwhile just trashing the current photovoltaic array and starting over with new equipment.

The current system is tied to the grid, but a whole house battery is looking more appealing.

Yeah. Batteries are hitting their moment soon. Still a little pricy, one really wants 20-40kw to run the house a day or two fully. But summer 2026? I imagine a lot of installs

energy costs have spiked hard over that same time here in Ohio (still cheaper than rest of US), but by around this summer or next it will make more sense to buy and store off peak in a battery than not to.

10kw is about enough to play energy broker games. When people in older homes are looking at $400 and $600 a month in energy costs the savings from a battery taking off peak power will be hard to ignore

We have a 12kw solar system and 10kw battery, and use an energy wholesaler (Amber here in Australia). A year on, running air conditioning through summer and heating through (our admittedly mild) winter, zero electricity bills and $900 in credit. The whole system will pay for itself in 4 more years.

I haven’t updated my spreadsheets, and due to tariffs and limited installers in the area who charge so much for installation as of last year I still couldn’t make the numbers work, but soon I will be in the same position: it’ll be more expensive to not do it

Imagine what could happen if LiS (Lithium Sulfur) batteries shift into domestic production. They're lighter, higher energy density and about 40% the cost.

They should be hitting the market in 2027-2028.

The LiPo batteries for holes are doing very well though! They’re starting to use them for cars in China, bringing down costs even more.

Car tech in China is off the wall. Living in the US right now technologically feels like when I used to live outside of it and didn’t have easy access to the tech

That’s the psychological break point. Once 10k is $999 and your local electrician can wire it in for $1,000 to $1,500 it is go time.

Out in encounter here most have a generator and a bypass switch already. Quite a few are plug and play ready

The other technology I've been watching for 20 years now are making bilaminate perovskite solar cells that last as long as silicon ones.

Every year, they last a little longer, and produce about 20% more photovoltaic energy per square foot. Unfortunately, they degrade much faster.

Honest to god I just read a lot of white papers by the US Military who are freaked about the potential for the US to lose primacy based on these challenges, begging political leadership to realize “we can’t shoot this problem”
