After dispatching Brentford and Liverpool, Argyle are looking to knock out Premier League opposition for only the third time in the club's history #pafc

The Cup went from a pointless distraction for our underfunded squad under Brent, to a target of a payday/Cup run almost becoming part of the business plan under Hallett. That Dorchester one killed me, up there with Accy 1-5 away for "what am I doing here" vibes.
Think that's harsh. Our terrible record long-preceded Brent's takeover. What this really aligns with is having a bigger, better financed squad. Whether part of the plan or not, we must have made a good sum from cups since 2017
The vibe I had was that the cup games came as a complete surprise to us every season pre admin, then they were just unwanted (as was almost everything football related) under Brent, and since he left we value them much more.
Idk, we generally played first choice sides in most of those games during the Brent era. We definitely played weakened sides in the pre-admin era, for the League Cup at least. Used to be a humiliation per-season in that tournament. From 1993 to 2017, we won 4/25 League Cup ties
Only missed 5 of these. Som3 decent performances. That 3-1 defeat against a very strong top 4 Ipswich side away from home was a very good display. A cheap pen at the end massively flattered Ipswich
In recent years, Argyle have competed well against PL sides, taking Liverpool to a replay, Chelsea to extra-time and a missed pen from a shootout, and leading Palace 2-0, before knocking out Brentford and Liverpool, the first two PL sides Argyle have knocked out
As far as I can tell, this is the full list of top-flight teams Argyle have knocked out of a cup competition #pafc
Liverpool, Brentford (24/25)
Wimbledon (90/91)
WBA (83/84)
Burnley, QPR, Birmingham (73/74)
Sheffield United, Stoke (64/65)
West Ham (61/62)
Birmingham (60/61)
This is only the fifth time that Argyle have made it to the last 16 of the FA Cup. Argyle won 1-0 at home to Derby in 2007 and away at WBA in 1984 to reach the QF, but lost 1-3 at Man City in 1988 and 0-1 at home to Gateshead in 1953 #pafc
Argyle have also reached the last 16 of the League Cup thrice: they lost 3-5 to Villa after two replays in 60/61, but beat Stoke 3-1 at home in 64/65 and won 3-0 at QPR in 73/74, reaching the semi-finals on both occasions, the latter of which was last to Man City #pafc
Argyle used to be notorious for having a dreadful cup record, but in recent years it has massively improved. The only recent season in which Argyle have lost the 1st round of the League and FA Cup, we reached the final of the EFL Trophy #pafc
From 2000/01-2012/13, Argyle progressed to the next round of the FA/League Cup just 11 times from 37 ties, including a run of 0 wins from 11 games between a 3-2 victory at home to Hull in January 2008 and 3-0 win over financially wrecked Pompey in August 2013
The Stourbridge game really sticks out to me, same season where we avoided relegation from the EFL on the final day. The worst thing is that it didn’t even feel like a shock for Argyle at the time, we were in such a sorry state. Mental to see how far we have came.
