I never knew the dead name of my trans roommate. When she passed away in 2021 the police investigators insisted on using it. It took me like a month to forget what it was.
Every single person who has, or has known someone who has, changed their name when they got married should be able to get their head around this. It’s a disingenuous lie to pretend it’s that hard, and something that can’t just be done.
I named my child, I loved their name. They told me it didn’t work, and I let it go immediately. Not my name, not my life, not my choice. They’re happier now, isn’t that what a parent should want?
Former boss once declared, "I know you as XXXX so that's the name I'm using. CBA to remember a new name." They were a guest on an outing (I was member of a folk group). Didn't take long for someone to tell them they were being rude & ignorant.
The premier of Alberta is a titanic trans-bigot. She hates her first name and doesn’t go by it.
So I use it whenever speaking about her.
Genuine question here: should I not do that? I can’t stand her, and oppose everything she does. But in refusing to use her chosen name, am I being shitty?
