I was always amused when the pro players of games like Battlefield or Call of Duty used to drop their graphics DOWN to get better FPS - like they know the play is better by hitting your target box on time than having realistic skin on shadows :)
In my article about games and theater (using Yakuza: the Stage Play as a case study) I talk about how I think this is a consequence of games feeling like they need to prove themselves as a legitimate art form to film and TV buffs. But games aren’t film OR tv! So stop it!
It’s even weirder to me that it’s always this idealized version of film that they are chasing too—ignoring that a set is not built realistically as to accommodate the camera and equipment or that lighting in a scene can evoke a mood more than a sense of space. To them, film is purely “real.”
