I think that's what's happening. I didn't get much time to check it out because I was supervising 5th graders in the woods.

It is what's happening! This could be Physarum polycephalum, one of the few slime molds that eats mushrooms. Or it could just be traveling

*Traveling*, how great is it that they can do that?

I now have a vision of slime molds with tiny suitcases. "I'm going on an adventure!"

They do! They can travel significant distances 😄 You can sometimes see where they’ve been because they can leave a slime trail, like a snail.

The spore is kind of a suitcase: it has sunscreen, snacks, and livestock for when they land
The plasmodium will just pick things up and carry them around, like algae or dirt. Some slimes use that stuff in their fruit bodies as building material.
