I feel like structural damage but staying afloat for longer is still a good outcome way better chance of rescue and whatnot even if the ship is still cooked
It's entirely conjecture, though. The ship's actual durability was significantly less than its believed durability due to brittle steel and rivets, and this was a huge part of why it sank. A head on collision may well have been just as bad.
More crucially, though, in the moment it would have been lunacy to even *think* about a head on collision. It's hard to overstate just how damn close Titanic came to missing the berg entirely, and they were right to attempt the maneuver rather than take the 100% collision with guaranteed casualties
That is true, but it also adds to the point. The democrat perspective isn’t “We should avoid the iceberg entirely”, but “We should hit the iceberg but in a slightly safer way”
