Services that let you upload GIFs never actually serve them in GIF format, because the file sizes are massive. They convert them to video instead. My guess is that the blocker is the cost of doing that conversion. They'll happily serve GIFs from Tenor because they are already converted.

It may not be hard to do, but it's work to do, nevertheless. You need a player for animated GIFs in the client.

mostly because gifs suck as an actual format, an equivalent high-quality video is considerably smaller.

you can pass the gif to the video upload service if you want, i don't know what bitrate bluesky tries to encode these to though

there's also factors like image uploads still being stuck at 1mb, and even after considering a potential raise. large gifs are just like, not great
