If they’d given him what he wanted last year or mid season it would be less than what he’s eventually going to get. Being frugal is going to cost them. At some point you have to trust your evaluation of the player.

They had plenty of time to sign him. And it would have been cheaper. They can still sign him but it'll be tougher. And I really don't think his market will be any better then what the Jays offered him.

Not a bad idea for him to test the market anyway. He will either find out that he's not worth what he thinks he is by the offers he gets or the Jays realized they under valued him. And they have the choice of matching any other teams offer.

Or it falls on Vlad for demanding more than he is worth. If he was demanding $500+ mil, then it is on him, $400 mil or less, then I'd blame the Jays. In-between is harder to say.

Agree that without knowing Vlad's asking price the outrage faced by Shapiro/Atkins/Rogers is presumptuous. If Vlad thinks a team will meet his price next off-season and is willing to risk a down year or down market, I have no problem with him taking that wager. Too little information for blame.

That's why I'm holding judgement, somewhat. We don't know his asking price. If they offered him 470 and he still said no then I have to question his desire to be a jay for life. He won't get what he thinks he's worth in the off season and could be an Alonso situation.

If he was looking for Judge or Soto money, they had no choice but to balk. FA market will make clear to Vlad what he’s actually worth, then Jays offer likely looks more appealing to him. If he “wants to stay” and take Rogers money, he’ll have a chance, and a chance to make them win bid war. Smart.
