I sympathise with everybody dealing with the challenge. Looking at forecasts for algorithmic medicine in particular I thought today's students need to consider parallel careers, have interests in the arts, may be practical things. Medicine is going to be heavily disrupted in the next 20 to 50 years

1/4 Find a good MD MBA to start teaching young scientists how to “manage up”. This is drawing the picture and providing crayons to rather unimaginative leaders (definitely not you!). For ex: senior scientists do not need permission to meet! The office may be closed but they could meet elsewhere.

2/4 Journal clubs, informal tours of current research facilities and projects at universities, with regular zoom meetings and discussions by leaders, could form a lifeline and backbone of connection for young scientists now. Write curricula for students/recent grads to stay up to date.

3/4 Create a fund (senior researchers I am looking at you) to provide scholarships for new scientists to attend meetings.
Fan out and write op-eds, articles in local and national publications, about research, how it works, need for new funding sources, yield of research etc.

Support STEM schools & students any way you can - mentor MS/HS students, speak at career day, invite a class to tour yr facility, chaperone a college or workplace tour, volunteer at a FAFSA application night, volunteer w a STEM nonprofit, donate to sponsor a student internship, sponsor a scholarship
