I also this a lot in education. Do I have students that perform better than others? Of course. But when we look into why, far too often it is due to factors like parents’ wealth and privilege that often go back generations.

And going back to basketball, people make excuses for things like the free throw discrepancy saying Duke is just better. If they are actually better, then they won’t need the advantages and their superior skills will shine through. But far too often, that is not what we see.

Great point. The system is so confusing we can’t tell whether factors are causes or outcomes or both.

Be clear. I do think Duke is better than we are THIS year. But that doesn’t mean they haven’t gotten calls that helped them be up 15. (All free throws btw)
