The key is to help people understand how the manipulation works. Until enough people understand it, the slide into darkness will continue. I wish the media would get a clue, and stop reinforcing disinformation loops, but as long as they profit from the chaos, they will continue.

Algorithms in social media started out as a good idea. The idea was simple… let people see things that interest them, instead of having to sift through a collection of random posts.

Then, like every new technology, they quickly became a weapon. First, for monetary gain, and next, for power.

Zuckerberg’s empire and wealth expanded exponentially when he discovered that he could tweak the algorithm to drive eyeballs to his preferred content… and to advertisers and products. As long as people got the other content they wanted, nobody cared. They liked it.

But then, bad actors began to understand how the algorithm worked, and how to manipulate it to drive fake content into people’s feeds that slowly steered them toward the more and more extreme content they wanted them exposed to.

Remember in 2015-16, Russian media farms were able to infiltrate social media bubbles, and then direct people to action within their own communities. Sometimes creating conflict out of thin air by manipulating opposing groups into real life confrontations.

Those were the early days.

This is an excellent point. I eventually had to get off even the innocuous Instagram because the algorithm was offering me all kinds of unrelated bullshit. And then there were the ads. And then there was the promotion of threads, which I said no to over and over again, but which there;; still served
