That's my entire approach. That way, if the AI shortcut spews out garbage then they can understand and fix it.

Isn't "using AI to code" basically a management role? I think that while understanding how AI works might be computer science, I'm not sure that using AI is.

I've been shifting my perspective on how AI should be used for education—the quoted article actually deals with devs who can't code rather than students, but it's a similar problem.

I'm actually shifting my perspective on lots of EdTech, but this isn't really my domain, so I'll keep reading…

Is it really that much different from pasting together bits from StackOverflow? Doing something commercially is a bit different from studying - the goal is probably working code rather than understanding how it works - so does it matter if it works but they don't know why? Until it breaks!

Yes, it’s very different from pasting from StackOverflow. Pasting from SO requires the programmer to merge the bits together, it needs some oversight from the programmer. AI-generated code doesn’t

I think it matters a lot in real world code. Yes. I wouldn’t want to use code that the programmer who wrote it doesn’t understand!

Are we also guilty of thinking that all code written up to this point was done to a gold standard? I've read stories about key parts of the www code that have comments like 'this is a temporary bodge, I'll get it fixed soon' and are dated 1995 etc...

Indeed. I’m sure the number of bugs in software we use everyday is huge…
The same code AI models have been trained on, though!
