i always thought hard cut outros were for maximizing viewer retention as the viewer doesn't expect the video to end, giving them no time to click away

Unfortunately this is correct. Usually under 50% of viewers watch to the end of the video, and if you add around 30 seconds of wind-down with a 5 second end-screen it drops down to around 20%.

The truth is that not as many people see or care about the outro.

In my opinion, just starting the video instead of having an intro (like what @rtgame.bsky.social usually does) is way better and more engaging.
