Very simply, they don’t care about all children, only rich children. I grew up poor and remember when our school finally instituted free lunch. I remember some parents protesting outside our school about how if our parents couldn’t afford to feed us they should have killed us in the cradle
I know that. I grew up in Chicago and now where I am living there was/is disparity in public schools quality depending on where they are located and the economic status of the parents in the district. Why is this?
When they're ostriches with their head in the sand, these children are nothing but an abstract concept to them. When they don't have to see the suffering on poor children's faces, they can argue against feeding them out of "principle".
If they sat down with them like this, they could grow a heart.
