Hi friends! With Amazon working hard to be even more awful, I want to share instructions on how to download any and all digital books you may have purchased before Amazon removes the option to do this 👍 See below!

- Login to your Amazon account, and about halfway down the "Accounts & Lists" drop down menu is your "Content Library." From there, go to your Books. - Your Books will show all your books-- Those you've purchased, library books, samples, etc. You can only download the ones you've purchased.
- On the right hand side of the screen will be a menu labeled "More Actions." Click this and then click "Download & transfer via USB." - There will be a pop up telling you how to transfer the file via USB and a warning that the download feature will be going away Feb. 26th.
You MUST download all of your books before Feb. 26th.
- Select your kindle device and click "Download." The file will appear in your local download folder. You will have to do this for each individual book, as there is no way to download your entire library at once.
- You can read AZW3 files on Calibre, but you won't be able to do anything else with them (like put them on a different ereader). You will need to remove the DRM and convert the file type. The "DeDRM" plugin for Calibre is a good "set it and forget it" way to do this, and
I hope you don't mind a question/comment: when I try this, I get a pop-up saying I can't download the file because I don't have a Kindle or the Kindle app (even though I have the Kindle app on my iPad). So that's odd, especially for books I have already downloaded on my Kindle app.
Okay, let me preface this by saying I am NOT a computer savvy person. The best I have been able to figure out is to download the Kindle for PC app onto your computer and download from there (pretty sure this works w/ Kindle for Mac app as well).
HOWEVER, you actually have to download an older version of the app for it to produce files Calibre and DeDRM can work with. Some files will be KFX files which require other plugins to work with, and so I strongly, STRONGLY recommend making good use of the Calibre subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Calibre/
There is a ton of help in there right now for everyone trying to work out the fiddly wrinkles between downloading and converting their Amazon books.
I'm sorry I couldn't give more specific help, but I am still trying to work through the bits myself and didn't want to leave you hanging.
You are a god sent! unfortunately, I have a Mac :(
Before this change, I was able to connect my device and extract books directly from the kindle, but amazon fashioned an app for that, so that option is gone :(
I have the kindle matcha, so I assume this is why I cannot download anything.
I definitely recommend the subreddit then. It's just got so many more people troubleshooting problems, it's more likely someone will figure something out that will help you. It definitely seems like the newest version of their products, Kindles and apps alike,
Hi hello! When I get off work tomorrow morning I will poke around and see if I can figure out what's going on and a solution, and then get back to you 👍
Can you check? I get the same message, but it would seem it's because new devices are built in like that. I have the new matcha and all my content is now trapped on my account :(
I'm getting the same message, but it would seem this is because the new kindles are locked. I recently purchased a new kindle and well, all my books are trapped on Amazon :(
I replied to your other comment with kind of where I'm at for now. You might end up needing to download an older version of the app on your PC (or Mac, but there are other problems there), or emulating an older Android and using an app on that.
