TOMB RAIDER (NETFLIX)
Tomb Raider succeeds in capturing the campy but contemplative tone, feel, and atmosphere of the games, and Lara Croft herself has a briskly-paced, cleverly-implemented character arc throughout. The lackluster villains and inconsistent side cast drag this down, however.

By far and away the messiest and most ambitious of the Zombies trilogy, tackling all sorts of subjects and subplots to degrees of varying success but managing to more-or-less say some compelling things about racial tensions & social change. Funny and charismatic as fuck, too.

While the initial hook is somewhat concerning on paper, Zombies 3 is a surprisingly sweet and nuanced story about belonging, heritage, and culture that manages to twist some emotional gut punches towards the end. Some of the best songs and choreo in the series, too!

I used to think that Fallout 4 was just boring and mid; I realize now that I owe Fallout 4 a sincere apology, because I vastly underestimated just how ghoulish, soul-sucking, and creatively bankrupt it truly is deep down. Existential nightmare masquerading as a "video game".

On one hand, Cour 2 of Vanitas does things right that Cour 1 never did; it's almost gripping at parts, even. But on the other hand, the themes & worldbuilding are still complete hogwash and the tonal dissonance is at its absolute nadir here.

There's some actual clever mechanics with the occasionally solid gag and a decent, if floaty, gameplay loop. A shame, then, that Justin Roiland's relentless, unfunny improv frequently breaks the illusion reminds you how shallow and pandering High on Life really is.

It's like... *almost* a unique satire on content creation, reality shows, and Hollywood exploitation? But it's too preoccupied with making poorly-aged references and locker-room offensive quips to really do anything with its intriguing hook.
