I haven't been to a bar in years, but on Christmas Eve I went out with my sister who was in town. In order to go in the bar, I they scanned my ID and took a photo of me!

More or less normal for any place that mostly is dedicated to selling alcohol. You likely wouldn't be scanned at the store I run until you bought something, unless you were suspiciously young.

Major retailers have been doing this the last 15 years or so, ostensibly as liability protection. Funny enough seems different state to state and like you said, shop to shop.
Some spots in Michigan do, others do not.

I always used my mom’s first name because her maiden name is a hard to spell polish name… I had people refuse it and I would have to explain - it’s just a code, an easy to remember code. It could be anything.

Brilliant, I feel like that makes it more secure as a recovery method as well. In real world, mother's maiden name always felt too easily obtained to safeguard bank details..
