I despise the US military and donβt support the choice to serve in it, obviously, however I can understand the fear people have at this news. Itβs another step in the path towards their intended end goal of total social exclusion, and that just *is* going to scare people.
A surprising number of trans people are or have been military, though I have a suspicion it's for the benefits more than anything. Lemme get that military-grade HRT baby
As much as I dislike the idea of the military in general, the exclusion of trans people from social institutions is a way of dehumanizing them. And in this culture of patriotic respect, not allowing that to extend to certain groups is a social attack.
I mean on one hand I think its kinda good, it means Trans people aren't out there bombing people (ergo less people are bombing people), but I can't help but worry for their financial situations and ability to transition, as the military is the largest Trans employer.
Like the ramifications are massive here, and I think our ability to aid is gonna be directly proportional to our ability to empathize with veterans. Frankly they have skills that are useful and in this case, taking care of ex-military Queers is an act of intracommunal care.
But to your point, it may have been obvious to many of us but a lot of people have staked their ability to escape their families and gain HRT on military employment. Its an act of survival really, one we should have seen coming but I don't necessarily blame folks for desperation.
Took me a while to put it together too, honestly being on What The Trans?! US podcast helped me a lot. My cohosts really got me to engage more deeply on it.
The reality is, whether or not a person joins the military for patriotism or for survival, its on us to do right by those we can.
