(Also, if you're going to say you can't "afford to invest in every story," just check that shit out from a library, man. If they don't have it, request it! We still get paid when that happens, and YOU become a tastemaker in your local community!)

It is my goal as a librarian to get more people to realize that you can actually ASK us to buy books that you want to read! It helps us broaden our collections while helping authors get their books into the world.
I have actually used my local library's request form to request that they buy specific books on several occasions. They have always rejected my requests.
This is what I miss most about my old library. They had an online form and they'd buy every request unless it was already on-order. Definitely living "you don't know what you got till it's gone" bc the city/library I moved to 3 yrs ago must not have the resources my old city/library did. 😔
I’ll add to this that if you can afford to buy the book, get it from your local indie bookshop. Here in the UK, they’ll probably get it in stock the next day. My local bookshop often buys an extra copy to put on the shelves. As book lovers, they love finding new authors this way.
And on this topic - as a book buying customer talk to your booksellers. We can't read everything but we remember the conversations we've had about a new book that's amazing and why, and we'll tell other people buying the same sort of thing about what you loved too
Wheel of Time doesn't belong in this company. It's a finished story. The fanbase formed around The Longing. The 2 or 3 years between books as we eagerly awaited the next book.

I read the most of my friends (hyperlexia is a thing that happens to me not something I do) and it’s so fun to do this!!! If I like a weird little book I get to be the one to first tell my friends. It’s like being the first one to know a fun meme except better!
I think most people would be surprised at how little it takes to get something on the rader too. 3 (genuine) pre orders for a debut book would get my interest. Bookshops are as risk averse as publishers but booksellers react quickly to local demand. What we all buy and when makes a difference
Conservatives would lose their minds over Janitors of the Apocalypse and the aliens who don't use gender, so you have to switch every other time you use a pronoun...
