Ignoring trafficking means they also ignore the type of “work” these people are trafficked into , many women use nail bars paying cash to a man after their nails have been done by someone who doesn’t speak English ! Funny how they don’t moan about not hearing English then 😡

States also need to stop tackling very serious workplace abuses, up to and including slavery, as trafficking offences. The trafficking framework is deeply flawed and always has been (which is why so many states love it.)

Where modern slavery, which is also subtly different from trafficking at time, is mentioned it comes across as a side effect, something which people have only themselves to blame, and saying 1/10th doesn't really show the scale of it to most readers I would argue.

Throughout the piece "smuggling" is used where it should have been "trafficking". The framing of economic reasons, which are fair to mention, ignores a lot about how traffickers operate, and the way they exploit people, which is, I would argue, kind of important in an "in-depth piece". #r4today

If this was "just" a brief news article then the sparse mention of trafficking and modern slavery could potentially be excused, as an editorial decision, but as it is an "in-depth piece" the sparsity of information is liable to give readers a false impression of trafficking, I'd say. #r4today

Most readers will read 1/10th as a fraction, you know because it is. When discussing Vietnamese individuals it really does need to be explained that they, along with Albanians who often are misrepresented with this as well, form one of the main groups being trafficked in the UK for clarity. #r4today

Tbf I’ve just finished reading that and they do say in it that they are the most at risk of modern slavery and many end up in illegal cannabis farms or in the sex trade. It’s very awkward read as it shows they feel they have no other choice but it’s for economic reasons only

Issue, in my opinion, is they do not make it clear there is a difference between trafficking and smuggling which majority of readers would understand, and make modern slavery, which is also subtly different to trafficking, sound like a side effect for which people have themselves to blame.

My personal opinion after reading it is I can’t see how the situation gets any better. UK government wants the Vietnam government to stop the traffickers but they probably won’t as it’s bringing money back into Vietnam and many will take the risk based on a few positive stories they hear
