Romance as a genre is honestly one of the hardest to pull off imo, bc the entire premise depends on building a relationship that ppl are invested in. And that's not easy. Most of the best romance happens by accident, bc the relationship builds itself naturally and w/o forcing itself on the audience - ThreadSky

I find it's also harder to create a tense plot when you know the endgame (namely, these characters are most likely going to end up together). It's definitely doable but it's an additional challenge.

That's why there's usually more fanfics about non canon ships, bc many of those were written better on accident than the intentionally written romance. Why do these characters even like each other? Writing that is so complicated & many fail to explain why properly. Idk it's just something on my mind

I agree 100% but I will also bring up that when a story is specifically written to be a romance, not just have a romance subplot, it’s hard to come up with a premise that has a conflict involving the relationship - a lot of the time this leads to one of the characters being toxic AS conflict

That's part of why I'm in the final edit pass of a revision for my starting chapters; after 2 years of writing my serial, i know my characters much better and I'm a more practiced writer. I can get rid of since awkwardness at the start where i forced things together.

Some further continuity editing will be needed, but I can do that on the live pages. One of the advantages of starting with a serial, you have more time Ave feedback to make changes. 🙂

Imo it's comedy. It's so hard to make someone laugh or write a good joke. But I agree, romance is hard to write.
