Next week I have to give a presentation on translation regulation so, while reading about it, of course, I came across the “Kozak consensus/context.” I realized I didn’t know anything Kozak’s identity. Turns out, Kozak was a woman: Marylin S. Kozak. I had no idea! 2/9

But this isn’t the first time I found out some major advances of molecular biology were made by women hid behind a surname. A few years ago, I learned that the Okazaki from Okazaki fragments was also a woman: Tsuneko Okazaki. 3/9

And let’s not forget the Menten in Michaelis-Menten kinetics was also a woman: Maud Menten. Her name is everywhere in biochemistry, but how many students (and even senior researchers!) know she was a woman? 4/9

Last week, I attended the #PlantSciEd conference on plant science education. It was so inspiring! While I already had the idea of fostering representation in my lessons, the conference made me more aware and motivated. It’s probably why I remembered to look up who Kozak was this week. 5/9

We must seek out the untold stories of diverse scientists behind science advancement. Marginalized groups have always been in science; we just need to make their contributions visible. 6/9
