Eh - I find what he writes to be rather dumb, but he has been consistently dumb since at least 2014 (the Amazon-Hachette dispute, to be exact). At this point I think it's calculated.
S: idiots have very faillible arguments and positions, and always super naive, so it is always super tempting to engage them on it
People forget that theyre idiots
I've been reading him since the early blog days and he hit the peak when he admitted he got Iraq wrong. Didn't apologize, just admitted the reality that Bush screwed it up, like everyone left of him get t right.
Of course, he was wrong in the best way possible. Look where he is now.
Oh yeah, he's the "different countries have different safety standards and that's all right" guy. He said that after the Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh. I can't think of a more neolib thing to say
I get where he's coming from: if you are argue with right wingers they'll spam you (at best) with asinine wojak memes and, at worst, with straight up hate speech. But given that Matt is only interested in discourse as means of furthering his contrarian brand, it's impossible to feel sorry for him.
Many of us in art & culture sectors, particularly in architecture, know Matty Y has an undercarriage of scumbaggery in him.
The issue with him is that for the longest time many of his bad terrible takes were excused by apologists and enablers because he said a few decent things in the past.
Back when I was on twitter I read Yglesias claiming he grows his substack that way.
I've avoided him since and hope the bluesky mores around blocking rather than engaging trolls keep people from thinking that's a useful way to enrich themselves here.
please, stop being surprised by the mask being off, they want people to be outraged about their shittiness because the only joy that they can derive is from others feeling negative emotions
@leahmcelrath.bsky.social he's oblivious to how much this makes him just like the "annoying rightists" who get bored fighting amongst themselves. But nothing new about him being oblivious to something.
I mean yes, this is the ticket. Right winters aren't fun to debate or argue with, so in the absence of liberals or leftists, Twitter debaters will come here
Pathetic. I knew they weren't republican. They know nothing about the republican values. I knew they weren't trumpers because they know nothing about him. They're just anti-democrat.
Time to block @mattyglesias.bsky.social "Mr Twitter Files" He's hiding behind a "normal" picture. I'm sure there's plenty of his followers to block as well.
To think there was a time when I would religiously listen to him, Ezra, & Sarah Kliff on The Weeds. They seemed whipsmart, particularly about the ACA. Now, just over a decade later, and Sarah's the only one unscathed, the only one who isn't a pompous instigator masquerading as a thought leader.
The function of a lot of the op-ed class is solely to generate anger in their own presumed readership. They know that if they write an egregious article, their readership will spread it and engage with it.
I live with a former internet troll who's still pretty honest about liking interactions for the flavor of the other person's reaction instead of being right (like discovering that a sibling makes a hilarious noise when poked), so that seems right on the money here.
Long-time pundit, political blogger, current Substack guy. Big fan of YIMBY-ism and city planning. Politically, a centrist Democrat. Kind of a contrarian.
Maybe cuz I have the words genocide and Palestine muted to avoid "leftists" (who aren't leftists, just contrarians and fools), but I don't see them here.
He's right though. It is more fun to argue with "Leftists" than nazis and neo-confederates
Everyone who thinks they represent "the center" always finds themselves somehow to the right of everyone who supports unions, vaccines and food for poor people. funny that.
When we’re in the middle of a psychological warfare war, our only defenses are the block button, the mute button and the report button! Without them, I would never enter
Not everyone. A depressing number of people I used to respect follow and quote his garbage. He's the greatest example of the kind of guy people think knows everything about everything with no actual experience or expertise beyond punditry in any specific field.
Whaaaaat, the guy who wrote the article "Different Places Have Different Safety Rules and That’s OK" in response to a horribly lethal disaster of capitalist negligence wants to annoy leftists? What a shock.
I'm acting facetiously but genuinely: Matt Yglesias is one of the worst people alive today.
I can't bring any examples to mind because I'm old, but there were a few times when someone dropped a really imaginative insult on me and I had to like if not repost it
As I said on this repost until I found the original... he must not be getting any, which is why he's so angry. 🤣 when I engaged with people like him because they would freeze my account. Including on YouTube.
Bc he has a lot more followers on Twitter. I don't get it. Even people whose opinions and politics I don't like i can take something away from their posts sometimes. But I don't learn anything new from that douche. And he's an asshole
Listen, yall know me and how much I love to call out bullshit - but it’s pointless to engage with these kind of big accounts who only profit from us giving them any attention.
Already blocked that waste of a human existence :)
If that is the real Matthew Yglesias did he change his profile image recently because I think this is the real account and the profile pick is different.
I’m confused. I looked up his account and it gives left leaning centrist than anything else. Why block him? I don’t know him from Adam and am not on X so just judging by his Bluesky posts.
Yglesias is also a notorious climate denier which is why he’s on this mass block list. I invite everyone to use it because you can drive a bus through the Venn diagram overlap of those who disparage and misrepresent the findings of climate science and those who act like generic asshole trolls.
He appears to be Centrist, but posts for engagement not to make an actual point
He has realised that the right will just harangue and insult, whereas the left will try and debate
The reason why we listened to him was the large amount of followers, we felt he couldn’t be ignored. But those followers were rightwing trolls, bots and ppl that just enjoyed to watch a fight. We dont have that here.
What would happen here is that the lack of audience will make him easy to ignore
WaPo reported years ago that his substack was “tied for most followed by the Biden transition team” and his “policy posts were circulated among white house staff” - so it’s good that his psychopathic tweets were publicly dunked on.
None of us wanted to see his tweets on twitter. We REALLY don't wanna fucking see them here. Let's leave promoting right wing grifters by dunking on them over on the hellsite.
When my book was in the media and publicity stages, my publisher has me reaching out to various authors and celebrities to see if they would blurb it. They wanted to me each out to Yglesias and I was like "ehhh... maybe we pass on that guy..."
Oh little one. I'll fight you here. You're kind are too weak, and litrally reported me into oblivion on FB, X, and TikTok. Not using foul language or insults but finess. You can't handle it. I even got you to unknowingly agree with me or insult yourself. Good luck. Hope you see this.

I must have missed it.
People forget that theyre idiots
The difference is that with Amazon-Hachette, I agreed with his position but still didn't share his articles because his arguments were bad.
Of course, he was wrong in the best way possible. Look where he is now.

*goes immediately to block him*
All right, then.

And I thought myself so well informed.
Either that means I'm woefully unhip to the political scene, or this man is not as relevant as he thinks he is.
What a thing to aspire to
He's right though. It is more fun to argue with "Leftists" than nazis and neo-confederates
RIGHT????
everyone already knew this
I live in California because no way in hell I'd live in a red state like Texas.
I'm acting facetiously but genuinely: Matt Yglesias is one of the worst people alive today.

And thats it. No philosophical depth at all. Just adversarialism.
(Is that a word? It should be.)
DO NOT. FEED. THE TROLLS
Masochist.
Already blocked that waste of a human existence :)

He was the only person I said no about.
