Thank you for this, Mark. My husband died at home at the end of July surrounded by his family, music, memories and a good deal of humour. Only marred in his last 4 days by the difficulty in accessing end of life meds and care due to the change from LA to NHS end of life funding taking too long.
Every care professional involved was heroic but the system was stacked against them and us. I dread to think what he would have gone through without the 4 of us there to fill in the gaps.
Jill, it sounds really hard and you should have had so much more help. Hope you are all ok and can spend some time celebrating beautiful memories this Christmas
No, it was fine really. We managed to protect him from the worst issues as there were 4 of us, and some of the professionals went way beyond what we could have expected. Notably one of the community nurses and a doctor from the “hospital at home” team. They shouldn’t have to though, should they?
And thanks. We are having an early family get together but mostly* avoiding Christmas as we feel his absence too vividly as yet.
*We have a tree and have, for the first time for ages, all chosen to buy all the others presents. It has made us more kind to each other.
Happy Christmas to you too.
