So many industries have made people the product so they expect (false hope) to reap financial rewards (in the various forms) if they have enough followers.

Influencers are the newer wave of folks that would go to LA thinking they'd be famous when most don't--but less sunk costs/risks involved.

I unfollow people still concerned with follower count. Trying to monetize everything I guess. They’re living in a reality that no longer exists. I’ll follow them again when they evolve and offer something of actual value to the collective…

I worked in radio for 25 years and can confirm. Followers, listeners, viewers…none of it matters. Yesterday I deleted an app where I had 21,000 followers because it was all trash anyway. (The app, and the posts that drew 21,000 people).
