Vaguely book-related grumble: "Books Read Quick" would not be nearly as compelling a fundraising event as Games Done Quick, but I wish I could use my reading speed for charity somehow.

Paper? I read about a page a minute.
Digital? Closer to two minutes and my eyes fatigue much quicker - can't read as long.

Your reality may be different, but the movies are 2-3 hours each and my bet is a leisurely reading speed will take longer.

By my estimates, to hit the same time mark you'd need to read at approx 650 WPM. At a reading for leisure pace, even for a speed reader, that would be a little surprising to me (I don't think I go above ~500 WPM unless I'm trying to go fast), but, from a meta perspective, I'm gonna guess same time.

If I recall correctly, I think the extended movies are about 12 hours, which you could do in a day. I think a casual read of the trilogy would take about twice that (24 hours), for a fast reader... which you'd want to spread out over at least 3 days, maybe 4.

I'm a fairly fast reader, and I think it'd take me longer than that. Probably about 15 hours. So I'll say no, but I'll be impressed if the answer is yes.

So, based *solely* on my leisure reading speed yesterday, it would take me about 634 minutes (10 hr 34 min) to read the LotR trilogy. The internet is telling me 726 minutes (12 hr 6 min) for extended editions including credits.

BUT—

I highly doubt that reading Tolkien would be as fast as a light (okay, angsty) romantasy. Plus I wouldn’t exactly be impatient to find out what happens next.

If I read 20% slower, that’s ~792 minutes, outside our 30 minute margin of error for matching the extended edition length.
