I'm sure there's a social anxiety component for some of them too, but yeah, as ever, the answer to "Why is America like this?" is just about always racism.

I've never been but I've never gotten the impression it's a particularly scary city? I walked around downtown LA a bunch and it was pretty pleasant also. I don't get this fear.

I have visited many US "big cities" in the course of my life and none of them were scary. I lived in SF for ~5 years in the '00s and it was great. Seattle, Chicago, Cleveland, all great in their own ways.

Racists in Britain who live in rural areas are absolutely similar to this we just aren't allowed guns so it doesn't have this kind of tactical flavour to it.
