"Latin noun that has been co-opted and brutalized into acting as a preposition in the English language" is a very round-about way for this person to tell you they don't understand how the evolution of languages works.
Brutalized is dramatic, considering the English uses the same amount of words in the same function as Latin. Still means "by way of [word,]" but the "of" is provided by via instead of the noun because English doesn't have genitive noun forms. If anything, the issue is it's TOO close to the original.
