At Con of the North I had the great pleasure to play Triangle Agency by @calebzane.bsky.social and @seanireland.bsky.social. There’s loads to praise, but I’d like to single out the dice mechanic!

Usually I think dice mechanics are the least interesting part of any design. But Triangle Agency puts the aesthetic theme of triangles *into the dice* in a way that’s inordinately clever.
You’re rolling six d4s (pyramid-shaped dice). You’re trying to get 3s. Not 3s or higher. Just 3s. You can spend points to turn non-3s into 3s. If you use this to generate exactly three 3s, you get benefits. If you roll three 3s without spending points, you get super-benefits.
“No, dude,” the designers seem to say. “It’s triangles. It’s all triangles. Look, every time you roll, you’re trying to do triangles.” It’s slick and smooth and doesn’t get in the way of fast play, but it keeps that triangular aesthetic at the forefront at all times. Just so clever!
