Five years ago today (almost exactly), it occurred to me that the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard may have been the most widely used dashboard in human history.
And I’d say that since that same time, the work of @jburnmurdoch.ft.com has had as large an influence — on both the field and the world — as any other’s.
Can't think of better work then this in the complete realm of #dataviz (yeah yeah, the classics 🙄, but we live now don't we?).
Plus the work of @jburnmurdoch.ft.com and colleagues still keeps evolving and is a true inspiration. (enough sucking up 🤣)
That’s a helpful data point, thanks Amanda! It was an encouraging early “win” for data, wasn’t it? I was disappointed to see that, ultimately, data didn’t save us from turning on each other, even though we were dealing with a common “enemy” in the form of a virus. We still have so far to go…
We have a whole chapter on how the dashboard was made in Dashboards that Deliver - the story is incredible. While the dashboard gets a lot of the focus, it was just one part of the bigger Coronavirus Resource Center. I wish more people spent time in those articles and details too.

The ocean water temperature year charts were also very present.
The Ocean temperature or arctic sea ice visuals ones fit pretty well though!

The idea was around already, and Ellie Highwood https://elliehighwood.com/2017/06/12/climatechangecrochet-the-global-warming-blanket/ and Joan E Sheldon https://sheldonfiberdesigns.net/the-globally-warm-scarf/ were definitely earlier with their projects.
