This Bloomberg story is largely accurate about how little the US cared about trade talks last time.

The UK trade debate around Trump has been embarrassing. All the more reason why there will only be a real trade strategy when there is debate about the UK's real choices - so that looks likely to be after publication of a document not before.

UK-US trade talk one of the times I marvel at the impact (lack) of trade experts / trade twitter. So much written, one of our number even wrote a book, and still the same colossal amount of bad takes, with just a few folk who appeared to pay any actual attention.

The thing that all the articles I've read on this seem to miss is that they are a big country with large negotiating power, and we are a small country (relatively) with little negotiating power. Any trade deal would be one where they call nearly all of the shots.
